Alex has been sleeping for almost three hours. Julia is sleeping too. They both have colds with horrendous-sounding coughs that are so frequent and juicy-sounding (in a gross way) because they are two and under and do not yet know how to blow their noses or (gross again) spit constructively. And so they have runny noses, they sneeze frightening slime, and they cough. Open-mouthed sea lion coughs. Especially my dainty flower daughter.
I’m working on teaching Alex to cover his mouth when he coughs, so he can catch all the spitty germs in his hand rather than letting them fly free. He dramatically covers his mouth after the coughing is finished. But at least the hand is now involved, so we’re getting there.
Both kids were WIDE AWAKE last night until finally around eleven. I was too, of course, listening to them cough, sometimes in unison, sometimes separately…sometimes in harmony…sometimes in counterpoint…it was kind of like “Do, a Deer” from The Sound of Music if Julie Andrews and all the kids had had the croup.
Only not as joyful.
Anyway, this morning I had Julia dressed and ready to go…was getting Alex dressed and ready to go, and he was wiping his runny nose on the back of his spit-free hand while coughing his germs at me…and I asked him “Alex, do you want to stay home today?” And he said no. So I asked if he wanted to go to school and see his friends today…and he said no, so I figured I should be the grown-up and make an executive decision – so we stayed home, the kids and me. And it went pretty well, despite the coughing and the tug-of-war for my attention.
I kind of liked it, to be honest. And I have eggplant parmesan in the oven, and dishes are all done, and my little boy is now waking up calling for me…Bill will be home soon…that’s about where I am at the moment.
Gotta go – have a lovely evening!
