This happened probably about 5 years ago, before we moved to our current home…but it popped in my head while I was driving home for lunch just now, so I thought I’d post it…
I had to stop at the post office on the way home. The post office is on a one way street…two lanes of traffic…and not too long after the post office the road forks into two directions. I needed to go off to the right. The post office is on the left. (Just setting the scene for you.)
I parked on the right side of the street and scurried across the road to the post office. Mailed my stuff or picked up tax return forms or did whatever I was doing. Headed back outside.
Traffic is always busy and kind of daredevil on that part of the road as people suddenly remember "oh no, i meant to go THAT way" and try to elbow their way in between the other cars in the other lane.
I watched and waited for a break in the traffic, unwilling to die so young, when, amazingly, both lanes of traffic slowed and stopped to let me – ME – cross the street. I waved my heartfelt thanks to the kind and benevolent drivers as I crossed, enjoying this beautiful moment of humanity.
And then I realized that the traffic light above had turned red just about the same time I was trying to cross.
