I finally started working out at the Y.
We joined, as a family, a little over a month ago, but with one thing and another, it’s taken me this long to get myself on a machine.
I signed up for this 12 week program that teaches you how to use all the machines, bit by bit. Apart from an ancient treadmill that I had around 10 years ago, and an exercise bike that I had back then too, or before, I haven’t actually used any fitness equipment. I’ve got an assortment of dumbbells, and my yoga mat, and an 8" high step thing. And a bench. But haven’t used the big stuff.
So. This 12 week program begins with the cardio stuff. Today I did 20 minutes on a bike and 20 minutes on a treadmill. Not too crazy fast, but not all that slow either. I was sort of surprised and impressed with myself, to be honest. I thought I’d be embarrassingly weak…and all the senior citizens in the room would point and laugh as I feel to the floor, wimpering. Okay, not really.
The deal with this 12 week program is I have to make it to the gym 3 times a week. Today counts as the first day, since I did 40 minutes. I’m planning to go again Wednesday after work. There’s a kid care kind of program too, so I can drop the kids off there and they get to have fun and do crafts and all that while I burn a couple hundred calories. And then I’ll go one more time on the weekend, probably Saturday.
And for now, that’s enough. Just getting time for myself 3 times a week is a big deal for me. And it’s not that I’m begrudged the time – it’s that I have a hard time taking it. So this whole thing is exercise on a couple of levels. And all of it’s bound to be good for me.
