Buttoning Her Own Buttons

   IMG_0552

Yeah, it's mid-October and it was in the thirties when I got up this morning.

But Julia has inherited my dress-inappropriately-for-the-season-and-go-outside-barefoot-even-if-it's-cold gene and this is what she opted to wear yesterday.

Besides, it's pink.  That's what's important.

The thing is, though, it buttons up the front.

And the holes are kind of tight.

  IMG_0557

I offer to help.

IMG_0558

And sometimes she might let me do a button or two.

IMG_0559

But mostly she wants to do it herself.

IMG_0560

She is very determined.

IMG_0561

And some mornings my fingers get tense with the urge to claw their way in and get the buttons done up quickly.

IMG_0562

But when that happens, I try to sit on my hands and keep my mouth shut and just wait.

IMG_0563

So that she can do it – all by herself.

IMG_0564_2

And learn that it's important to keep trying.

IMG_0567

Over and over.

IMG_0568

Again and again.

IMG_0569

No matter how long it takes.

IMG_0570

Or how frustrating it may get.

IMG_0573_1

Because the reward – that feeling of accomplishment –

IMG_0574_1

Is so worth all of the effort.

IMG_0577

Just ask Julia.

  1. Okay, I know I am only supposed to be here for the TWD post, but I could not resist scrolling down a bit and I just LOVE THESE BUTTON PHOTOS! I am so jealous that I did not think to do something like this for my boys’ scrapbooks when they were little like this…somehow it doesn’t seem like it would be the same at 16! What a great series of shots…to be treasured forever! Very nice work. Very lovely little girl!
