I don't think it'll be as difficult as some of my past "what is it" offerings….
That, my friends, is the operculum of a sea snail my husband caught while he was digging quahogs yesterday. We cooked up the snail, and the operculum popped off.
Pretty, isn't it? And we've all learned a new word, too!
It's the little things, people. The little things.
Looks like a fossil of a shell? Whatever it is, it’s beautiful and would make an awesome necklace!
Not a fossil!
And I agree – it is beautiful and would make a cool necklace. Hmmm.
Animal, mineral or vegetable?????
Yes!
Okay, animal.
butterfly wing?
Looks like a chrysalis to me?
Nope!
Nope!
Can I guess again?
Of course!
Right, the only other thing I can think of is that it is a shell ferom some sort of creature. After that I’m stumped!
I was going to go in the direction of some sort of hard candy – looks like an orange slice LOL
Well, you’re getting warm…
Nope – not edible. At least not that I’m aware.
A shell, hmmmmm, nope no idea after that!
Oooooh, SO close!!!!
Ah carp! I’m stumped! A shell, I just can’t pinpoint what exactly!!!! Grrr! you’re gonna bug me now :0)
Bwahahahahah!
Then my work here is done!
If no one guesses it (and arkonitebabe, you are SOOOOO close) I’ll give the answer later this evening. I think. My son has a friend sleeping over tonight, so I might get sidetracked. But I’ll try not to.
Hmmmmph! you could go off a person very easily (only joking!)
I’ll probably not see this until tomorrow, so you will keep me in suspenders!
Snail shell, seed casing, or fish scale maybe?
Close, not close, close.
im gonna guess a snake scale.
sorry – nope
sea snail, I’d never have got that in a month of Sundays! Thanks for the fun though!
It looks like a nautilus, but I’ve never seen one that’s clear like that. Is this glass or amber?
Neither! It’s an operculum, which translates to “little lid” and is kind of the protective cover on a sea snail. It popped off during cooking and I thought it was really pretty, so I kept it. And took pictures of it.
